At St. Josefs Hospital, we have optimal conditions to offer operations for you:
The anesthesia team, Drs. Deja and Mittelstädt, who have been working with Dr. Rogge for a long time, have special expertise in anesthesia for premature infants, newborns, infants, children, and adolescents. This allows us to make the greatest risk factor in many operations as safe as possible for you.
Our operating dates are usually on Saturdays, making it easier for you to care for your children/adolescents.
Below, we would like to inform you about the course of events and answer frequently asked questions about operations, and also provide insights to alleviate your concerns.
An important point to note beforehand: We would like to ask you to familiarize yourself with the use of the Arzt-direkt app. This app, provided by the supplier of our practice software, offers similar functions to doctolib and is operated and hosted directly by the supplier of our practice software in Germany. You can find information about the software on their homepage. The app allows
During a regular consultation appointment, which you can schedule through the appointment booking, we discuss the necessity of an operation together.
If an operation is medically sensible and desired by you, we discuss the course of the operation and the necessary background information, as well as the risks and possible alternatives to the operation. You have the opportunity to ask questions and, if necessary, schedule another appointment to discuss it further. The conversation is documented with the usual information sheets. If all guardians are present and they are already certain that the operation should be performed, they can confirm their consent by signature and leave the sheet with us in the practice. For adolescents, it is important to us that they are involved in this process and also document their consent. You will receive a scanned copy of it, encrypted, via the Arzt-direkt app or by email. If you need time to think or need to discuss the procedure with the other guardians, you will receive the original information sheet and can send us a picture with the signatures via Arzt-direkt as soon as you have decided on the operation. For the other guardians, appointments can be scheduled both on site in our practice and online as video consultations. As soon as all signatures are available, we schedule the operation appointment. Currently, we perform these operations exclusively on Saturdays, so that care for you is usually easier.
Regarding anesthesia, you will receive the most important information from us during the conversation (usual anesthesia procedures and general risks), and you will also receive the anesthesia information sheet. You can read this at home and fill out the patient questions on the last pages. If you have questions beforehand, a telephone consultation with the anesthesia team is possible; otherwise, a pre-operative consultation with the anesthesiologist will take place on the morning of the operation day.
In any case, you will know both the surgeon and the anesthesiologist personally before the operation.
… you and your child are naturally excited. This is normal ...
We recommend showering thoroughly in the evening, having a reasonable dinner, and going to bed at a normal time. Plan to spend more time putting your child to bed.
Pack a bag with the completed operation documents and sufficient change of clothes, in case your child needs to change after the anesthesia or stay in the hospital after the operation.
Wake your child up in good time, but not too early (you don't want to challenge the fasting period unnecessarily). Let them have a drink at home (clear fluid, preferably tea).
Please plan enough time for the journey, parking, and walking to the hospital, even if experience shows that the time on Saturday mornings is usually favorable. Parking is usually easiest on the P2 parking lot of the St. Josefs Hospital (diagonally opposite the practice).
To make the journey as easy as possible for you, we will give you a plan during the pre-operative consultation, but initially, you only need to report to the information/reception desk in the St. Josefs Hospital on the ground floor. From there, you will be directed to the operating room on the 1st floor and we will be informed.
We will take you to the operating room and you will see the familiar faces of our practice. From here, we can allow a maximum of two accompanying persons, so as not to create too much disturbance in the recovery/preparation area.
In the preparation area, you will also meet our anesthesiologist, who will discuss the anesthesia, local or regional anesthesia with you again and answer your last questions. We will also check all documents and examine your child again to ensure that nothing speaks against the operation.
The patient will then receive pre-medication (pre-anesthetic medication) for the operation, to calm them down and shield them, and then the separation will be easier and the need for anesthetic medication will be significantly lower. This can cause the child to dream or even see flying butterflies. Don't be irritated by this.
Finally, it's off to the operating room; for this, you need to separate from your child, and only a favorite toy can come along. Our experienced anesthesia staff will take loving care of your child, so you don't have to worry. The pre-medication will help your child not to notice this so much. With older children, we often see rather curiosity about the operation - please support this curiosity, it makes it easier for your child.
Now comes the most strenuous time for you. Waiting while your child is in the operating room ... Be assured, we are fully concentrated on the task and with your child. Good care requires time, too. If questions arise or significant deviations occur, you can rely on us to inform you directly and, if necessary, consult with you.
As soon as we have finished the operation, our anesthesiologists will wake your child up and we will come to the recovery room with your child. Your child will be half asleep at that time, possibly still quite weak and unable to sit up properly. But most importantly, they will not remember much of this time afterwards.
During the further recovery time, you will be at your child's bedside and our staff will always be nearby. We will assess together how awake your child is, whether they can already have something to drink or eat, and when they can finally go home. This usually takes 2-4 hours after the operation. Before you leave, your child will be examined again and we will look at the wounds or dressings together.
Please note that the anesthesia can have after-effects. A parent should not drive home alone with the patient. There should always be a reasonably adult person to take care of the patient in the car, even during the journey. Nausea/vomiting, etc. are rare, but can occur, and you should be prepared.
The patient should not be left unattended for the rest of the day and should avoid physical exertion as much as possible. Climbing frames and trampolines, as well as any participation in road traffic, are absolutely forbidden.
We recommend drinking enough and eating light meals. This includes neither McDonald's nor pizza or kebab. A good idea will be white bread with jam, yogurt, or noodles with tomato sauce.
At the agreed time in the evening of the operation, you will have a short video consultation with the surgeon via Arzt-direkt, to answer any questions and ensure you are safe for the night.
When the day comes to an end, you will have experienced a lot, but your child will have too. Accompanying your child to bed will then be quite easy, but sometimes everything comes to mind and you need more time. Plan for this in advance.
In case of an emergency, always call the emergency number 112 if your child is not responding properly or is breathing strangely!
For all other cases, you will receive Dr. Rogge's mobile phone number after the operation, so you can get quick help even if it's not urgent enough to call the emergency services. However, please also call us after calling the emergency number, so we can provide you with further tips or information for the emergency services. We can also switch to a video consultation via the Arzt-direkt app at any time, so we can see what's going on if something looks strange to you.
If you have questions that are not urgent, you can also contact us via the Arzt-direkt app.
